Description of electoral system:
The President is elected by absolute majority vote through a two-round system to serve a 5-year term.
In the Parliament, 112 members are elected by plurality vote in single-member constituencies to serve 5-year terms and 12 members are elected by indirect vote to serve 5-year terms.***
*** 12 seats are filled by paramount chiefs elected in separate elections.

National Democratic Institute Calls for Women Participation
The National Democratic Institute (NDI) on February 23rd urged political parties to involve women, youth and persons with disability in the forthcoming presidential, parliamentary and local council elections slated for November 17 this year.
The political parties that signed to the memorandum titled 'open and safe elections pledge' include the Peace and Liberation Party (PLP), the Citizens' Democratic Party (CDP), United Democratic Movement (UDM), the ruling All People's Congress (APC), the main opposition Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP), National Democratic Alliance (NDA), People's Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) and the Revolutionary United Front Party (RUFP).
24 Hour Campaign School for female aspirants
UN Women in June 2012 sopported two local NGO's namely Camapign for Good Governance and the 50/50 group to run a 24 Hour Campaign School for female Aspirants nationwide. The Campaign School under the theme Building Skills and prmotoing the Women's Agenda seeks to narrow the gap and build on the capacity needs of women aspiring for political office. The School is a ''learning by doing'initative and took the form of both therotical and practical training sessions. The facilitators included female Members of Parliament as well as seasoned female facilitators from accross the country.
